Chief Minister M.K. Stalin recounted his role in initiating the Chennai Metro Rail project during his earlier tenure as Deputy Chief Minister, when he travelled to Japan to secure funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the project. He noted that the first-phase line, running from Wimco Nagar to the Airport and from Central to Parangimalai, has carried crores of passenger trips since opening. He said Phase 2 works are progressing rapidly on the Madhavaram-Siruseri, Lighthouse-Poonamallee, and Madhavaram-Sholinganallur corridors, which will soon be opened to the public. Stalin further listed planned metro extensions - Airport-Kilambakkam, Koyambedu-Pattabiram, Poonamallee-Sunguvarchatram, Tambaram-Guindy, Lighthouse-High Court, and Siruseri-Kalaignar Centenary Arangam - stating that once complete, Chennai would become one of India's cities with the longest metro rail connectivity.
