M.K. Stalin demanded that the Union government fully withdraw the Delimitation (Amendment) Bill, arguing that despite a verbal parliamentary assurance that Tamil Nadu's seat share would not be reduced, the bill's actual provisions grant the Delimitation Commission sweeping powers he says could be misused against southern states. He called for a constitutional safeguard similar to the 25-year freeze on delimitation enacted under former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and referenced an article he wrote in The Times of India on the subject.

#WithdrawDelimitationBill

Today is a defining moment in Tamil Nadu’s political history. It is the day we will see the outcome of our relentless resistance against delimitation.

In the face of our sustained protests and uncompromising opposition, the Hon’ble Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister have, on the floor of Parliament, offered a verbal assurance that Tamil Nadu’s representation will not be reduced.

But their words say one thing, their actions reveal another. The Bill they have introduced is nothing but a calculated deception. We reject it outright. It cannot be trusted. It will not be accepted.

The sweeping powers granted to the Delimitation Commission under this Bill make one thing clear. At any time, in any manner they choose, they can alter the representation of states to suit their political interests. This so called legislation is a carefully crafted trap, loaded with dangerous intent.

This Bill must not be rushed through in haste. The Union Government must withdraw it in full. If they attempt to bulldoze it through Parliament, emboldened by the numbers they have stitched together, and in complete disregard of our opposition, they will face the consequences in Tamil Nadu.

Jawaharlal Nehru assured that Hindi would never be imposed, and he honoured that promise as long as he lived. The present Union regime, however, speaks of protecting state rights even as it systematically dismantles them piece by piece.

What we demand is clear. The same constitutional safeguard that former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee provided by freezing delimitation through constitutional amendment must be restored.

The Union BJP Government must listen to the voice of Tamil Nadu.

I am also sharing for your attention my detailed article published in today’s edition of @TimesOfIndia, explaining the grave dangers posed by this delimitation exercise: #SayNoToNDA #TNWillFightTNWillWin #Delimitation #வெல்வோம்_ஒன்றாக

Editorial context

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin issued a detailed statement demanding the Union government withdraw the Delimitation (Amendment) Bill, calling the legislation a 'calculated deception.' He said that while the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister had verbally assured Parliament that Tamil Nadu's representation would not be reduced, the bill's actual text grants the Delimitation Commission broad powers that could later be used to alter states' constituency counts to political advantage. Stalin invoked Jawaharlal Nehru's historical commitment against imposing Hindi and contrasted it with what he called the current Union government's practice of dismantling state rights while claiming to protect them. He demanded a constitutional safeguard similar to the 25-year freeze on delimitation that former Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee had enacted through constitutional amendment. He warned that if the bill were passed over Tamil Nadu's objections, there would be political consequences in the state, and noted he had published a related article in The Times of India. The statement reflects the DMK's core position on Centre-State relations ahead of Tamil Nadu's elections.
