M.K. Stalin congratulated newly sworn-in Chief Minister Vijay and welcomed his first announcements, but pushed back against the new government's claim that the previous DMK administration left a Rs 10 lakh crore debt and an empty treasury. Stalin said Tamil Nadu's debt remains within permitted limits and that the state's financial position had already been made clear in the February budget.

Editorial context

M.K. Stalin congratulated Thiru Vijay, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), on assuming office as Tamil Nadu's new Chief Minister, and welcomed the announcements signed on his first day. However, Stalin objected to the new Chief Minister's claim, made in his first address, that the outgoing DMK government left behind a Rs 10 lakh crore debt and an empty treasury, asserting that the state's debt remains within legally permitted limits. He said the DMK government had already presented a clear picture of Tamil Nadu's financial position in its budget the preceding February, and questioned why the new government made promises to voters after that budget was public. Stalin noted that despite five years of challenges including COVID-19, floods, and what he described as discrimination from the Union BJP government, the DMK administration implemented numerous welfare schemes. He expressed hope the new Chief Minister, still new to state administration, would learn to fulfil his poll promises and wished the new government well in continuing Tamil Nadu's development.
