DMK President M.K. Stalin officiated the 'self-respect marriage' (suyamariyathai thirumanam) of V.K. Siddharth, son of Member of Parliament Dr. Kalanidhi V, and S. Ashraya. Self-respect marriages, pioneered by social reformer Periyar E.V. Ramasamy, are conducted without priests or traditional religious rituals and are associated with the Dravidian movement's anti-caste, rationalist ideology. Stalin said that since Periyar's time, such wedding platforms have doubled as venues for political dialogue and the promotion of rationalist thought, and that his interaction with party members at the event continued that tradition. He called for more self-respect marriages to be held and for reasoned political conversation to once again take place in every household.
