DMK president M.K. Stalin strongly condemned the arrest of his party's Vilathikulam MLA, Markandeyan, by the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government in Tamil Nadu. In a strongly worded statement, Stalin accused the state government of running a pattern of targeting former DMK ministers, legislators and online supporters who criticise administrative failures, while doing little to act on a minister accused of drug-related conduct and a case of alleged gang sexual assault involving a ruling party legislator. He said the arrested MLA had been denied access to his lawyer and supporters, and that people carrying medicines for him were also stopped, calling this a denial of basic legal and human rights. Stalin referenced a recent court rebuke of the government over including unrelated criminal sections in defamation cases. He questioned whether the rule of law or arbitrary rule prevailed in Tamil Nadu, and warned police against carrying out unlawful orders of the ruling dispensation, saying there would be consequences if they did not act lawfully and conscientiously.
