Condemning the ruthless and vindictive attitude of the state administration, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on March 3, 2014, denounced Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for willfully defying the explicit directives of the Supreme Court of India by refusing to withdraw police cases slapped on traditional fishermen protesting the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. Stalin described this obstinate refusal as deplorable, anti-democratic, and deeply condemnable. He pointed out that while the highest court of the land had specifically instructed the Tamil Nadu government to take immediate steps to withdraw hundreds of frivolous First Information Reports (FIRs) and sedition charges filed against peaceful fisherfolk, the AIADMK government persisted in harassing innocent villagers, impounding their fishing boats, and denying them passport clearances and government certificates. Stalin emphasized that poor coastal communities defending their sacred marine livelihoods, biodiversity, and family safety must not be criminalized as anti-national elements by an arrogant state. He recalled how previous DMK governments led by Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi consistently protected traditional fishing rights and handled civil protests with empathy. Stalin demanded the immediate dropping of all charges, affirming that the DMK will relentlessly fight for justice for coastal families.
