Editorial context

Commemorating International Women's Day on March 7, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin shared a comprehensive philosophical article elaborating on the ancient heritage of gender equality in Tamil classical literature and the radical feminist struggles championed by the Dravidian movement. Stalin pointed out that while orthodox traditions sought to subjugate women to domestic confinement and patriarchal subservience, Thanthai Periyar's Self-Respect Movement placed women's liberation, rationalism, and remarriage rights at the very forefront of social revolution. He proudly recalled how previous DMK governments led by Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi translated these revolutionary ideals into statutory reality by enacting the historic 1989 law granting equal property inheritance rights to daughters decades ahead of central legislation, pioneering 30 percent reservation for women in government jobs, and establishing self-help groups (Mahalir Thittam) for economic self-reliance. Stalin emphasized that true societal development cannot be achieved without complete gender equality in education, employment, and political decision-making. He pledged that the DMK will continue to fight for 33 percent parliamentary reservation for women, strict legal protections against domestic violence, and comprehensive economic empowerment. Stalin affirmed the DMK's dedication to women's equality.

This is an initiative of unofficial DMK and Dravidian Ideology supporter, a fan of Thanthai Periyar, Perarignar Anna and Kalaignar — not affiliated with any official DMK party or persons.
