Reports on Vodafone India passing calls data to foreign organisations is a natonal threat. TRAI should better regulate MNC players.
Sounding a grave alarm regarding national security and citizen privacy, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on March 10, 2014, highlighted alarming investigative reports revealing that telecom operator Vodafone India had allegedly shared sensitive communication and call records with foreign intelligence organizations. Stalin emphasized that unauthorized transmission of Indian citizens' communication metadata to overseas entities constitutes a dangerous compromise of national sovereignty, defense intelligence, and constitutional fundamental rights. He strongly criticized the central authorities and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for regulatory laxity, demanding immediate, rigorous scrutiny and stringent regulatory mechanisms to govern multinational telecom corporations operating within India. Stalin pointed out that in an interconnected digital era, communication security and data sovereignty are just as vital as physical border defenses. He recalled how previous progressive policies advocated by the DMK always demanded strict state oversight over critical public utilities and telecommunication networks to prevent illicit surveillance. Stalin urged the Union Ministry of Communications to conduct an impartial judicial investigation into the data breach, penalize errant multinational corporations, and enact robust data protection laws safeguarding citizen privacy. He affirmed that safeguarding citizen privacy remains a non-negotiable democratic imperative.
