Addressing a massive and spirited evening election rally in the historic coastal port city of Thoothukudi on March 17, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin delivered a stirring address championing the welfare of port laborers, salt pan workers, and traditional fishermen. Stalin remarked that the vast ocean of citizens gathered under the night sky demonstrated the electorate's deep anger against the incompetent and corrupt AIADMK administration. He pointed out that Thoothukudi—the proud pearl city and industrial maritime gateway of southern Tamil Nadu—had suffered severe economic stagnation due to crippling power blackouts, delayed expansion of the V. O. Chidambaranar Port, and utter state neglect of small-scale salt manufacturing units. Stalin recalled the monumental developmental initiatives executed under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi's DMK governments, including establishing major thermal power plants, modernizing port terminals, and setting up welfare boards for unorganized laborers. He promised that the DMK will secure international port connectivity, guarantee continuous industrial electricity, and provide special seasonal relief to coastal laborers. Stalin urged the gathered thousands to vote overwhelmingly for the Rising Sun symbol. He affirmed the party's unwavering commitment to southern industrial resurgence.
