Expressing grave alarm over the catastrophic deterioration of Tamil Nadu's public finances, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on March 18, 2014, cited national media disclosures by NDTV revealing that the state's total outstanding debt had skyrocketed to an astounding 1.75 lakh crore rupees under the AIADMK regime. Stalin questioned where the state was heading fiscally under Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, observing that governance had stooped to unprecedented new lows of reckless borrowing and administrative bankruptcy. He pointed out that while the ruling party accumulated massive loans, no capital assets or productive infrastructure had been created; instead, public funds were squandered on vanity schemes, astronomical corruption, and relentless full-page newspaper advertisements. As a direct consequence of this fiscal recklessness, Tamil Nadu was forced to spend a huge percentage of its annual revenue solely on debt servicing, leaving zero fiscal space for hospital medicines, school infrastructure, or industrial incentives. Stalin asserted that the AIADMK had systematically pushed a financially robust state toward imminent bankruptcy. He urged the electorate to hold the ruling party accountable at the ballot box, affirming the DMK's commitment to restoring fiscal discipline.
