Addressing a mammoth public gathering in the historic agrarian heartland of Thanjavur on March 20, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin delivered a stirring address championing the rights and welfare of Cauvery delta farmers. Stalin remarked that the vast ocean of citizens gathered under the evening sky demonstrated the electorate's unshakeable determination to reject the corrupt and anti-farmer AIADMK regime. He pointed out that Thanjavur, celebrated as the rice bowl of Tamil Nadu, had been pushed into unprecedented agrarian crisis by the ruling party's complete failure to secure timely Cauvery water releases from Karnataka, leading to widespread crop failures and farmer suicides. Stalin underscored the DMK's firm resolve to protect the delta ecosystem, highlighting the party's formal election manifesto commitment to cancel hazardous coal-bed methane extraction projects. He recalled the monumental agrarian welfare measures implemented under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi's DMK governments, including waiving seven thousand crores of farm loans, establishing free electricity for agrarian pump sets, and desilting irrigation canals. Stalin urged the vast gathering to vote overwhelmingly for the Rising Sun symbol to restore agrarian dignity. He affirmed that preserving delta agriculture and water security will always remain non-negotiable.
