Articulating the Dravidian movement's perspective on contemporary Indian federalism in an interview with The Economic Times on March 21, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin emphasized that national politics had undergone a fundamental structural transformation since the eras of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Stalin observed that the days of centralized, single-party dominance had permanently yielded to multi-party democracy, wherein strong regional parties representing distinct linguistic and cultural identities play an indispensable role in shaping national policy. He noted that coalition governance had democratized decision-making, compelling New Delhi to respect state autonomy and linguistic diversity. Stalin pointed out that while national parties often seek to impose unitary, majoritarian agendas, the DMK has consistently utilized its parliamentary strength to secure landmark federal devolution, including major infrastructure projects, classical language status for Tamil, and constitutional protections for state rights. He asserted that any stable government at the Centre must reflect India's pluralistic reality through genuine cooperative federalism. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will always stand as the unyielding voice of Tamil self-respect in national politics. He affirmed that regional autonomy and linguistic diversity remain vital for India's constitutional survival.
