Editorial context

Addressing a mammoth public gathering in coastal Nagapattinam on March 21, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin championed the fundamental rights, maritime security, and economic welfare of Tamil Nadu's traditional fishing communities. Stalin pointed out that Tamil fishermen faced recurring brutal attacks, unlawful arrests, and seizure of mechanized boats by the Sri Lankan Navy, while the central and state governments remained indifferent spectators. He recalled the decisive welfare measures instituted under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi's DMK governments, which created dedicated housing for fishermen, established diesel subsidies, and provided special lean-season financial assistance. Stalin emphasized that the DMK manifesto outlined a comprehensive blueprint for coastal development, including modernizing fishing harbours, establishing cold chain logistics, and securing an international maritime agreement to safeguard traditional fishing rights around Katchatheevu. He called upon the coastal electorate to vote decisively for the Rising Sun symbol to ensure fearless representation in Parliament. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will relentlessly fight to protect the life, dignity, and livelihoods of every Tamil fisher. He reiterated the party's sacred duty to coastal communities. He affirmed that protecting maritime livelihoods and community dignity will always guide the party.
