Issuing a stern ecological warning on World Water Day, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on March 23, 2014, alerted that while international hydrologic studies projected severe national water scarcity by 2020, Tamil Nadu would experience acute ecological collapse much sooner due to predatory river sand mining patronized by the AIADMK government. Stalin highlighted that major riverbeds across the state—including the Cauvery, Kollidam, Palar, Vaigai, and Thamirabarani—were being ruthlessly gouged using heavy mechanized excavators in blatant violation of environmental norms and court directives. This plunder by ruling party syndicates had destroyed natural subsurface aquifers, lowered the water table by tens of feet, caused saltwater intrusion in coastal deltas, and dried up drinking water borewells in thousands of villages. Stalin condemned Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for providing total administrative and police protection to the illegal sand mining mafia while ignoring the cries of dying delta farmers. He promised that the DMK will enforce a complete clampdown on illegal riverbed quarrying, promote manufactured sand (M-sand) for construction, and build extensive check dams. Stalin affirmed the DMK's resolve to protect Tamil Nadu's precious water resources.
