Our DMK's 2011 election manifesto included koovam restoration and first steps for connecting rivers. #worldwaterday
Observing World Water Day on March 23, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin underscored the Dravidian movement's pioneering commitment to ecological preservation, urban water security, and intra-state river interlinking. Stalin highlighted that the DMK's 2011 election manifesto had articulated a comprehensive, scientifically grounded vision for environmental sustainability, including the ambitious Chennai Cooum River Eco-Restoration project and preliminary engineering works for interlinking peninsular river basins within Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that while the previous DMK government under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi allocated substantial budgetary resources, established the Chennai River Restoration Trust, and commenced physical desilting, the incoming AIADMK regime abruptly shelved these vital projects purely out of petty political malice. Stalin emphasized that unchecked urbanization, vanishing catchment bodies, and depleted groundwater aquifers posed severe ecological threats to future generations. He asserted that sustainable water resource management requires long-term scientific planning rather than cosmetic public relations stunts. Stalin affirmed that upon returning to power, the DMK will prioritize comprehensive ecological rejuvenation of all major rivers, safeguard urban water bodies, and execute vital irrigation link canals. He reiterated the party's unwavering dedication to water security.
