As we enter 10th day of 2014 election campaign, I reflect strong feeling prevailing among public on price rise, power crisis, (1/2).

Editorial context

Reflecting on the overwhelming public sentiment witnessed during the first ten days of his grueling 2014 parliamentary election campaign, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on March 24, 2014, highlighted the powerful undercurrent of popular anger prevailing across Tamil Nadu over crushing price rise, severe power cuts, and agrarian distress. Stalin noted that having traveled through diverse urban centers, industrial clusters, and rural agricultural blocks, the universal grievance expressed by working families was the unbearable burden of runaway inflation on essential food commodities, milk, and public transport fares. At the same time, the catastrophic failure of the AIADMK government to manage the power grid had paralyzed micro, small, and medium manufacturing units, throwing hundreds of thousands of daily wage laborers out of work and leaving rural homes in darkness for ten to twelve hours daily. Stalin emphasized that this acute public suffering thoroughly unmasked Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's hollow propaganda of 'Peace, Prosperity, Progress'. He affirmed that the people of Tamil Nadu have resolved to deliver a resounding democratic defeat to the arrogant AIADMK regime by voting for the Rising Sun symbol.
