Observing World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin commended the symbolic gesture of illuminating the Tamil Nadu Police Headquarters in blue, while emphasizing that symbolic awareness must be translated into urgent, comprehensive public health action. Stalin pointed out that clinical research and epidemiologic studies indicated that Tamil Nadu had one of the highest reported rates of autism spectrum disorder in India, highlighting the acute need for early screening, diagnosis, and developmental interventions across urban and rural communities. He stressed that a truly civilized society is measured by how it supports and nurtures its most vulnerable citizens, particularly children with developmental challenges. Stalin highlighted the severe shortage of specialized government therapy clinics, sensory gymnasiums, and trained special educators, which forced low-income parents to pay exorbitant fees at private clinics or go without essential early therapy. He called upon the government to integrate mandatory developmental screenings into primary healthcare centers and expand inclusive education facilities in state schools. Stalin affirmed the DMK's unwavering commitment to championing comprehensive healthcare access and social inclusion. He affirmed that expanding specialized pediatric healthcare remains a vital moral responsibility.
