Condemning the persistent sabotage of southern Tamil Nadu's economic destiny, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 3, 2014, declared that the Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project was an ambitious, visionary mega-infrastructure initiative designed to revolutionize maritime trade and industrial growth across southern coastal districts. Stalin emphasized that the project, conceived over a century ago and vigorously launched under the UPA government through the persistent efforts of Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi and TR Baalu, would dramatically reduce maritime shipping distances, generate thousands of port-related jobs, and transform Tuticorin into a global transshipment hub. However, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, driven purely by political vengeance and personal animosity toward the DMK, had consistently obstructed the project by manufacturing bogus legal obstacles and using fishermen's livelihoods as a disingenuous pretext. Stalin affirmed that sustainable channel dredging and modern navigational bypasses fully protected marine ecology while creating immense economic opportunities for local coastal youth. He pledged that upon forming a progressive government at the Centre, the DMK will ensure the expeditious completion of Sethusamudram to fulfill southern Tamil Nadu's industrial potential. He affirmed that transformative infrastructure remains essential for unlocking regional economic equality.
