Exposing the hollow posturing and cruel hypocrisy of the AIADMK administration toward coastal communities, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 3, 2014, condemned Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for shedding crocodile tears over fishermen's welfare while actively persecuting them in court. Stalin pointed out that while Jayalalithaa claimed to be the protector of fishing communities to oppose maritime infrastructure projects, her government had stubbornly refused to withdraw thousands of sedition and criminal cases slapped against peaceful coastal fishermen, women, and activists protesting the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. He highlighted that the state government flagrantly disobeyed explicit Supreme Court directions and Madras High Court recommendations instructing the withdrawal of all non-violent protest cases to restore community normalcy and civil liberties. Stalin noted that thousands of innocent coastal youth were unable to obtain passports or seek employment because of these vindictive police FIRs. He called upon coastal voters to reject the ruling party's deceptive crocodile tears and elect the DMK, which has consistently stood as an unyielding defender of fishermen's rights and democratic dissent. He affirmed that protecting civil liberties and democratic dissent remains fundamental to human rights.
