Exposing the opportunistic and politically motivated resistance to southern Tamil Nadu's industrial transformation, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 3, 2014, highlighted the continuous shifting of goalposts by reactionary forces regarding the landmark Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project. Stalin pointed out that in 2012, communal elements and the AIADMK regime vehemently opposed the canal project by demanding that the underwater shoals known as Adam's Bridge or Ram Setu be declared an untouchable national monument, relying on religious mythology to halt maritime development. Yet, when that argument failed to persuade modern scientific scrutiny, Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa opportunistically pivoted to claiming concern for fishermen's livelihoods—the very same community her government routinely harassed and ignored. Stalin asserted that this blatant contradiction exposed the AIADMK's complete lack of genuine concern for either cultural heritage or fishing rights, revealing instead an unyielding desire to sabotage a project conceived by Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi and Arignar Anna. He affirmed that the DMK will relentlessly fight for the project's completion to unlock economic prosperity for southern Tamil Nadu. He affirmed that modern infrastructure projects must be pursued with scientific vision rather than political malice.
