Describing one of the greatest humanitarian engineering achievements in Tamil Nadu's history, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 8, 2014, declared that the landmark Hogenakkal Drinking Water and Fluorosis Mitigation Project stands as an eternal jewel in the crown of DMK governance. Stalin recounted how Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi conceived and executed this mammoth project with financial assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, overcoming immense political and geographical hurdles to pipe pure, treated potable water across rugged hilly terrain to over thirty lakh citizens in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. He emphasized that for generations, impoverished rural communities had suffered horrific skeletal and dental fluorosis due to contaminated groundwater, leaving thousands of young children crippled and elderly villagers incapacitated. The DMK's visionary project permanently liberated these communities from fluoride poisoning, quenching their thirst and restoring public health. Stalin condemned the AIADMK regime for delaying the final distribution works out of petty political jealousy. He pledged that the DMK will ensure uninterrupted water supply from Hogenakkal to every single household in the region. He affirmed that clean drinking water remains an inviolable fundamental right for all citizens.
