Expressing grave concern over the economic collapse of the Union Territory of Puducherry, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 12, 2014, highlighted how the ruling administration had squandered immense developmental opportunities over the past five years. Stalin pointed out that instead of leveraging Puducherry's unique constitutional status and industrial incentives to attract modern manufacturing investments and create local employment, historic textile enterprises such as the Anglo French Textiles mill, Swadeshi Cotton Mills, and Sri Bharathi Mills were either locked out or completely shut down. In addition, vibrant leather tanning and processing units had been forced out of business due to erratic power supply and crushing municipal tax burdens. He noted that tens of thousands of skilled workers and traditional families had been thrown into destitution without wage compensation or alternative livelihoods. Stalin contrasted this heartbreaking neglect with the visionary industrial policies of previous DMK-led alliances, which consistently safeguarded worker welfare, expanded industrial infrastructure, and provided vital subsidies. He pledged that the DMK will champion the reopening of historic mills and restore Puducherry's manufacturing glory. He affirmed that reviving closed manufacturing units remains vital for protecting worker livelihoods.
