Citing a detailed investigative report published in prominent national magazine The Week, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 13, 2014, advised BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi to rectify the severe social and economic shortcomings in his home state of Gujarat before promising to transform the entire country. Stalin pointed out that the magazine's comprehensive empirical analysis revealed alarming deficits in Gujarat's human development indicators, including widespread rural poverty, high infant mortality, pervasive malnutrition among tribal children, and acute drinking water scarcity across arid districts. He emphasized that building infrastructure solely for corporate conglomerates while neglecting human welfare, public healthcare, and primary education does not constitute genuine or sustainable development. Stalin highlighted that Tamil Nadu, guided by the Dravidian philosophy of inclusive social justice under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi, achieved vastly superior educational enrollment, higher life expectancy, and comprehensive social security networks. He cautioned voters against believing corporate-sponsored marketing hype that masks severe socio-economic disparities. Stalin affirmed that India needs inclusive, secular development that uplifts every marginalized section rather than majoritarian slogans. He affirmed that true national development must prioritize human development over corporatized propaganda.
