Challenging the aggressive political marketing surrounding the purported Gujarat model of governance, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 16, 2014, questioned whether Narendra Modi's record represented the standard to which India should aspire. Stalin cited verified national health surveys, parliamentary reports, and demographic statistics demonstrating that Gujarat suffered from alarming rates of acute child malnutrition, high infant mortality, and widespread gender-selective abortions that severely skewed the state's child sex ratio. He pointed out that despite loud corporate claims of uninterrupted industrial power, over eleven lakh rural and tribal households across Gujarat remained completely without basic domestic electricity connections. Stalin contrasted these severe social deficits with Tamil Nadu's pioneering human development indices achieved under successive Dravidian administrations led by Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi, where universal noon-meal schemes, free maternal healthcare, institutional deliveries, and extensive rural electrification elevated societal well-being. He emphasized that genuine economic growth cannot be measured merely by corporate tax concessions while vulnerable children suffer stunted growth and basic public health infrastructure is neglected. Stalin affirmed that Tamil Nadu's inclusive Dravidian model offers the true path for national development.
