Highlighting the pioneering legacy of Dravidian social justice in advancing gender equality, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 19, 2014, detailed the transformative women empowerment policies introduced during previous DMK administrations under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi. Stalin recalled that it was the DMK government that launched the landmark Women's Self-Help Group movement in Dharmapuri in 1989, which grew into a massive socio-economic revolution enabling millions of rural and urban women to attain financial autonomy, launch micro-enterprises, and secure low-interest bank credit. In addition, the DMK enacted revolutionary legislation granting equal inheritance rights to daughters in ancestral property, instituted 33 percent reservation for women in local bodies and government employment, and introduced generous marriage assistance schemes paired with gold for poor brides. Stalin pointed out that while the DMK systematically empowered women to become self-reliant decision-makers, the current AIADMK regime had neglected SHGs, delayed revolving funds, and ignored soaring household inflation. He promised that the DMK will revitalize women's credit programs, enhance maternity assistance, and ensure comprehensive workplace safety. Stalin affirmed that women's empowerment remains foundational to Dravidian governance. He affirmed that holistic social security remains essential for true gender justice.
