Severely criticizing the state government's cynical commercialization of fundamental human needs, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 19, 2014, shared investigative reports exposing how the AIADMK regime was selling packaged drinking water bottles under government branding while millions of thirsty citizens endured severe water scarcity. Stalin pointed out that access to clean, potable drinking water is a fundamental human right that must be guaranteed free of cost to every household through municipal and rural distribution networks. Instead of completing vital piped drinking water schemes, the ruling administration had turned water distribution into a commercial enterprise, forcing impoverished families to buy packaged water at steep prices. Stalin contrasted this exploitative approach with the visionary initiatives of previous DMK administrations under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi, which executed comprehensive combined water supply projects such as the landmark Hogenakkal, Ramanathapuram, and Cauvery drinking water schemes to provide piped water across thousands of villages. He demanded that the government halt this commercial exploitation, expedite stalled water infrastructure projects, and ensure equitable drinking water distribution across all drought-affected districts immediately. He affirmed that access to clean drinking water is an essential human right that the state must unconditionally safeguard.
