Editorial context

Highlighting the severe socio-economic toll of chronic electricity deficits across Tamil Nadu, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 22, 2014, condemned the ruling AIADMK government for crippling working-class livelihoods and small-scale industries. Stalin pointed out that relentless power outages lasting eight to ten hours every day had forced thousands of micro-enterprises, lathe workshops, printing presses, and weaving units to shut their operations permanently. Daily-wage earners, skilled technicians, and home-based artisans who relied on electricity to run small machinery were pushed into extreme poverty, unable to earn daily subsistence or service bank loans. He contrasted this acute energy starvation with the tenure of previous DMK administrations under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi, which systematically added generation capacity, modernized regional transmission grids, and attracted major manufacturing investments through reliable power supply. Stalin criticized Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa for offering repetitive excuses rather than commissioning long-term generation projects. He demanded immediate load management relief and pledged that the DMK will restore uninterrupted electrical power to protect industrial livelihoods and economic prosperity. He affirmed that sustainable industrial progress requires dependable energy infrastructure and responsible public governance.
