Editorial context

Calling upon constitutional custodians to protect the sanctity of Indian democracy, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on April 23, 2014, declared that the Election Commission of India must never yield to executive power or illicit money influence. Stalin asserted that the constitutional body entrusted with conducting free and fair elections has a paramount duty to act without fear or favor, holding all political parties to identical standards of lawful conduct. He pointed out that the pervasive distribution of corrupt cash inducements by the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu had reached scandalous proportions, threatening to subvert the genuine will of the electorate. Stalin emphasized that public faith in parliamentary institutions depends entirely upon the impartiality, swiftness, and rigor with which election observers respond to electoral malpractice complaints. He cautioned that if the Election Commission allows itself to be perceived as subservient to the ruling state government, it inflicts lasting damage on democratic governance. Stalin urged election officials to deploy intensive aerial and ground surveillance, conduct immediate raids on illicit cash hubs, and take uncompromising action against any official found compromising electoral neutrality.
