Addressing media correspondents in Chennai on April 23, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin briefed the press on the formal complaints lodged by the DMK with the Election Commission of India regarding widespread illegalities committed by the ruling AIADMK. Stalin revealed detailed documentary and video evidence showing AIADMK functionaries distributing large sums of unaccounted cash to voters under the direct protection of local police officers across various parliamentary constituencies. He pointed out that state government machinery, including administrative transport vehicles, was being illicitly deployed to ferry currency bags and induce voters, blatantly violating the Model Code of Conduct. Stalin expressed profound disappointment that despite repeated written representations from the DMK, election observers and flying squads had adopted a conspicuously lethargic posture, failing to intercept ruling party operators or seal transit corridors. He stressed that a democracy ceases to be authentic when the constitutional referee turns a blind eye to brazen electoral bribery. Stalin demanded that the Election Commission act decisively before polling day, seize illicit funds, and initiate immediate criminal prosecution against all guilty candidates and complicit officials. He stressed that independent oversight remains essential for maintaining public faith in elections.
