Expressing deep anguish over alarming media reports that the life-saving 108 Emergency Ambulance Service was on the verge of financial and operational collapse, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on May 23, 2014, called for immediate state intervention to rescue the vital healthcare service. Stalin highlighted that the 108 ambulance fleet saves hundreds of human lives every single day by providing rapid emergency transport for trauma victims, pregnant mothers, and cardiac patients across Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that acute fiscal starvation, delayed government subsidies, and poorly maintained vehicles had grounded numerous ambulances, forcing emergency medical technicians to work under severe strain without essential medicines. Stalin recalled with pride that previous DMK administrations under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi introduced and modernized the 108 emergency response network, making Tamil Nadu a national benchmark for pre-hospital trauma care. He warned that allowing this life-saving lifeline to disintegrate due to bureaucratic negligence was an unconscionable dereliction of state duty. Demanding an immediate emergency funding allocation and comprehensive fleet overhaul, Stalin insisted that the government prioritize public health infrastructure above all else. He affirmed that safeguarding public health infrastructure is an indispensable constitutional duty.
