Calling for uncompromising journalistic integrity and fearless public reporting, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on June 7, 2014, expressed deep disappointment over regional media silence regarding the alarming breakdown of law and order in Tamil Nadu. Stalin pointed out that while national news channels and newspapers in other states boldly held administrations accountable for heinous crimes and administrative negligence, prominent local media houses were routinely soft-pedaling or ignoring severe criminal incidents due to fear of harassment from the ruling AIADMK regime. He emphasized that a free and courageous press is the vital fourth pillar of constitutional democracy, tasked with exposing governmental failures and championing citizens' rights without fear or favor. Stalin noted that daylight robberies, extortion syndicates, and violent atrocities against women were surging across districts, yet widespread public distress found almost no reflection in mainstream news coverage. He urged journalists and media editors to shed institutional intimidation, take inspiration from courageous investigative reporters nationwide, and report ground truths objectively. Stalin affirmed that the DMK will always stand resolutely behind press freedom, defending journalists against authoritarian censorship. He reiterated that institutional transparency and public safety require absolute press freedom.
