Exposing the total failure of the state government's energy commitments, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on June 7, 2014, criticized the AIADMK regime for plunging Tamil Nadu into prolonged darkness amidst blistering summer temperatures. Stalin pointed out that Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa had solemnly promised that uninterrupted round-the-clock electricity supply would commence across the state from June 1. However, within twenty-four hours of that deadline, urban towns, industrial centers, and rural farming tracts experienced crippling, unannounced power cuts lasting seven to ten hours daily. He lamented the extreme suffering endured by infants, elderly citizens, and hospital patients during peak heatwaves due to recurrent blackouts. Stalin emphasized that small manufacturing workshops and textile weaving looms in western districts were being forced into bankruptcy, leaving thousands of daily-wage workers without livelihoods. He recalled that previous DMK administrations under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi proactively expanded thermal power stations, strengthened transmission grids, and anticipated seasonal demand spikes through scientific planning. Calling upon the government to cease making hollow claims, Stalin demanded immediate emergency power procurement and transparent load-shedding schedules to provide urgent relief to citizens.
