Demanding exemplary accountability from municipal planning authorities, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 1, 2014, urged the state government to take severe punitive and criminal action against all officials responsible for the catastrophic multi-storey building collapse near Porur. Stalin stated that the tragic loss of dozens of innocent construction workers was a direct result of institutional corruption, illicit planning approvals, and non-existent safety oversight by municipal engineering bodies. He pointed out that greedy developers were allowed to erect high-rise structures on weak, water-logged soil without mandatory structural integrity audits or soil testing clearances because compromised officials turned a blind eye for personal gain. Stalin emphasized that holding lower-level site supervisors culpable while shielding senior regulatory bureaucrats and political patrons was an unacceptable injustice. He recalled that previous DMK administrations under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi maintained strict development control regulations, prioritizing public safety and worker protection in all urban expansion projects. Demanding an immediate review of all high-rise construction permits across metropolitan Chennai, Stalin insisted that the state administration institute rigorous structural safety protocols and provide dignified compensation to victim families.
