Dismissing the state administration's superficial investigative mechanisms as an obvious eyewash, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 10, 2014, reiterated the DMK's unyielding demand for an independent Central Bureau of Investigation enquiry into the catastrophic Moulivakkam building collapse. Stalin explained that an ad-hoc judicial commission or a Special Investigation Team staffed by local police officers under the direct control of the state government would never have the autonomy to interrogate high-ranking cabinet ministers or influential Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority bureaucrats. He pointed out that sixty-one innocent lives were snuffed out because administrative safeguards were deliberately compromised to accommodate corrupt real estate interests. Stalin emphasized that when an administration is itself suspected of criminal complicity through improper regulatory approvals, it cannot credibly investigate its own culpability. He affirmed that an independent federal probe by the CBI, monitored by the High Court, was the only legal mechanism capable of examining banking transactions, seizing compromised blueprint files, and holding guilty promoters and state officials accountable. Stalin pledged that the DMK would continue pressing for an exhaustive CBI investigation in both the courts and the streets until full justice was secured.
