Staging an uncompromising democratic boycott, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 10, 2014, announced that DMK legislators walked out and boycotted the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly session after the ruling AIADMK regime adamantly blocked all discussions on the horrific Moulivakkam building collapse. Stalin expressed intense indignation that while sixty-one construction workers lay dead under debris, the state government completely refused to permit the principal opposition to raise urgent questions concerning administrative negligence, illegal planning approvals, and rescue operation deficiencies on the assembly floor. He remarked that when the Speaker systematically silences elected lawmakers from articulating grave public concerns, participating in routine legislative proceedings becomes an exercise in futility that validates an authoritarian facade. Stalin emphasized that the assembly's primary constitutional function is to ensure executive accountability during times of statewide distress. He recalled that previous DMK governments under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi consistently permitted exhaustive debates on accidents and disasters, welcoming constructive critique. Affirmed by the boycott, Stalin declared that DMK representatives would take the fight for justice directly to the citizens, conducting public tribunals to expose the government's complicity across Tamil Nadu.
