Leading from the forefront of public mobilization, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 12, 2014, presided over a mammoth protest rally in Chennai to demand an independent Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the Moulivakkam residential building collapse. Addressing tens of thousands of energized party cadres, trade unionists, and civic activists who converged on Egmore, Stalin declared that the state government could no longer evade public reckoning for the death of sixty-one innocent construction workers. He asserted that the tragic collapse was a man-made disaster caused directly by corrupt administrative clearances granted in flagrant violation of environmental, engineering, and town planning regulations. Stalin criticized the ruling regime for attempting to shield the housing minister and powerful private developers through a toothless, localized commission of inquiry. He pointed out that true governance requires immediate transparency, stern punitive action against regulatory violators, and generous financial packages for the families of deceased laborers. Stalin commended the discipline and enthusiasm of the participants, pledging that the DMK would continue to champion working-class rights and battle relentlessly until comprehensive justice was fully delivered. He declared that collective democratic resistance remains the strongest shield for vulnerable citizens.
