Heartened by the massive civic turnout at the opposition protest in Chennai, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 12, 2014, urged the AIADMK administration to respect the resounding voice of the people and immediately recommend an independent Central Bureau of Investigation enquiry into the Moulivakkam building collapse. Stalin noted that thousands of citizens, trade union workers, civil society leaders, and opposition volunteers marched through the streets, demonstrating widespread public revulsion toward administrative apathy and regulatory corruption that cost sixty-one innocent lives. He emphasized that in a healthy democracy, popular mobilizations reflect genuine societal outrage that no responsible government can afford to ignore or dismiss through arrogant silence. Stalin pointed out that the state government's desperate attempts to shield compromised planning bureaucrats had completely eroded public confidence in local investigation agencies. He asserted that an independent federal inquiry remained the only credible instrument to unearth the financial kickbacks and administrative clearances that enabled such unsafe construction. Stalin warned that if the government stubbornly resisted the popular demand, the DMK would expand its mass movement into every district of Tamil Nadu.
