Mr Katju's praises 4 Jaya and ages old allegations on DMK at this time raises questions on his rights to continue as Press Council Chairman.

Editorial context

Raising fundamental questions regarding the ethical integrity of statutory regulatory bodies, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 22, 2014, declared that Markandey Katju had forfeited his moral right to continue as Chairman of the Press Council of India. Stalin pointed out that Katju's public praise for Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, combined with his coordinated, vintage allegations against the DMK, revealed an unacceptable partisan alignment entirely incompatible with the neutral mandate of the Press Council. He emphasized that the Press Council of India was established by Parliament as a quasi-judicial custodian of journalistic ethics and media freedom, requiring its presiding officer to demonstrate exemplary detachment from day-to-day political conflicts. By deploying his official stature to launch partisan attacks and curry favor with ruling politicians, Katju had severely compromised the institution's constitutional credibility and public esteem. Stalin noted that when statutory leaders abandon institutional decorum to engage in partisan favoritism, they undermine public faith in the nation's democratic checks and balances. Demanding his immediate resignation, Stalin urged constitutional authorities to protect independent oversight institutions from politicization and ensure that public offices maintain absolute impartiality.
