Listening attentively to grassroots representations on coastal safety and environmental concerns, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 30, 2014, received a detailed formal petition from anti-nuclear activist Dr. S. P. Udayakumar opposing the commissioning of the third and fourth reactor units at the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tirunelveli district. Stalin engaged in an extensive discussion regarding the anxieties of local fishing communities, who feared radiation risks, marine ecosystem degradation, and inadequate disaster evacuation infrastructure along the southern coastline. He emphasized that while sustainable energy generation is essential for state industrial development, public safety and community consent must never be compromised through administrative coercion. Stalin recalled that previous DMK administrations under Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi consistently demanded robust technological audits, international safety certifications, and specialized development packages for surrounding villages before advancing major infrastructure projects. He assured the delegation that the DMK would scrutinize the petition's technical points thoroughly and raise legitimate civilian safety demands with state and central authorities. Stalin reiterated that responsible democratic governance requires balancing technological modernization with the paramount protection of citizens' livelihoods, environmental stability, and communal peace.
