Leaders like Kamaraj, Anna, Kalaignar & MGR upheld the decorum of debate in TN Assembly but now it has become a place for sycophancy to CM.
Invoking the towering democratic legacy of Tamil Nadu's founding statesmen, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin on July 31, 2014, lamented the precipitous decline of deliberative standards in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Stalin recalled that revered former leaders including K. Kamaraj, C. N. Annadurai, M. Karunanidhi, and M. G. Ramachandran had always nurtured parliamentary decorum by encouraging rigorous debate, welcoming policy critiques, and treating political adversaries with mutual dignity. In stark contrast, Stalin observed that the assembly floor had deteriorated into a stage for competitive sycophancy, where ruling party legislators spent valuable public time reciting effusive eulogies for the Chief Minister while neglecting urgent citizen problems. He stressed that when sycophancy replaces constructive scrutiny, governance quality inevitably collapses, leaving critical sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, and power generation in complete disarray. Stalin emphasized that legislators hold a solemn constitutional duty to represent their constituents faithfully rather than engage in theatrical flattery. He called upon elected members across party lines to revive the historic dignity of the assembly, urging them to prioritize meaningful policy discussions, demand accountability, and protect the state's storied democratic traditions.
