Stepping forward to secure legal justice for dozens of deceased construction laborers, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin moved the Madras High Court on August 2, 2014, by filing a comprehensive public interest writ petition demanding an independent Central Bureau of Investigation enquiry into the disastrous Moulivakkam eleven-storey residential tower collapse. Stalin pointed out that sixty-one innocent migrant and local workers lost their lives when the poorly engineered structure crumbled during heavy rains in late June. He stated that the local police investigation and the state-appointed judicial commission were inadequate mechanisms designed to shield corrupt planning authorities and influential real estate promoters. Through his petition, Stalin highlighted severe procedural violations, including improper structural stability certifications and illicit planning approvals granted in blatant disregard of Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority building regulations. He stressed that only a specialized federal investigative agency could unearth the complex web of administrative collusion, illicit financial transactions, and regulatory negligence that triggered the catastrophe. Stalin reaffirmed his steadfast commitment to defending workers' rights, demanding exemplary punishment for responsible officials alongside comprehensive financial restitution for bereaved families. He maintained that institutional accountability must prevail over commercial interests.
