Addressing a major public demonstration organized by the Trichy District DMK on August 2, 2014, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin strongly condemned the increasingly autocratic functioning of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. Stalin argued that the assembly had been stripped of its democratic ethos, with opposition lawmakers systematically denied opportunities to debate pressing public crises such as severe drinking water deficits, power failures, and deteriorating rural employment. He recounted how ruling party leaders used arbitrary suspensions and microphone cutoffs to evade legitimate oversight on state administrative failures. Stalin recalled that historic leaders including Perarignar Anna and Dr. Kalaignar Karunanidhi had always respected parliamentary traditions by listening patiently to divergent perspectives and responding with reasoned policy justifications. By transforming the assembly into an arena for sycophancy, the current government was betraying fundamental constitutional principles. Stalin exhorted party cadres to carry these democratic concerns into every neighborhood, organizing grassroots forums to apprise citizens of how parliamentary procedures were being dismantled. He reaffirmed that the DMK would vigorously continue its fight for institutional integrity, free speech, and people-centric governance across Tamil Nadu. He declared that democratic vigilance must prevail over executive overreach.
