Sept 25 to be observed as 'Black Day’ by DMK to condemn Sri Lankan President's UN speech, despite of human rights violations against Tamils.
Announcing a major political decision on behalf of the DMK, Treasurer M. K. Stalin declared that September 25, 2014, would be observed across Tamil Nadu as a statewide 'Black Day' to strongly condemn Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's scheduled address to the United Nations General Assembly. Stalin expressed profound anguish that the United Nations had permitted an accused war criminal to address the international community while hundreds of thousands of Eelam Tamils continued to suffer without justice, accountability, or closure following the 2009 genocidal offensive. He pointed out that credible international organizations and UN panels had documented systematic war crimes, including enforced disappearances, torture, and extrajudicial executions of civilians and surrendering combatants. Stalin emphasized that the Tamil people cannot remain silent spectators when the international community offers diplomatic honors to the architect of their tragedy. He called upon party cadres, students, democratic organizations, and the general public to wear black clothes and hoist black flags, sending an unmistakable message to the world that Tamil Nadu will persistently champion justice, international accountability, and self-determination for Eelam Tamils across all global platforms.
