But RTI had to be filed to establish that Srirangam constituency has indeed fallen vacant due to conviction & imprisonment of J.Jayalalitha.

Editorial context

Condemning the deliberate concealment of legislative facts by the state administration, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin highlighted the disgraceful reality that an application under the Right to Information Act had to be filed merely to officially establish that the Srirangam assembly constituency had fallen vacant. Stalin pointed out that following the conviction and four-year imprisonment of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa by a Bengaluru special court on September 27, 2014, she stood disqualified as a legislator by operation of law under Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act and the landmark Lily Thomas Supreme Court judgment. However, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Secretariat and Election Commission authorities colluded to suppress the formal gazette notification for weeks, attempting to protect the convicted leader's political standing and delay democratic by-elections. Stalin asserted that this blatant subversion of constitutional procedure and statutory mandates degraded the majesty of the law, proving that state institutions had been hijacked for ruling party interests. He demanded that the Election Commission uphold democratic norms, issue immediate election notifications, and ensure that constitutional law applies equally to all political figures without partisan favoritism.
