After much persuasion, TN assembly will convene on Dec 4. I hope members will be allowed to debate on important issues, unlike last session.
Welcoming the notification convening the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on December 4, 2014 following relentless pressure and sustained demands from the DMK, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin expressed hope that the treasury benches would permit genuine democratic debate on pressing public issues. Stalin recalled that during previous sessions, the ruling AIADMK government had treated the House with utter contempt, drastically curtailing session lengths, denying permission for adjournment motions, and systematically shutting off opposition microphones whenever uncomfortable truths regarding governance failures were raised. He emphasized that the assembly is the supreme constitutional platform where the executive must be held strictly accountable for its administrative actions, financial expenditures, and public commitments. Stalin stated that the opposition intended to raise urgent public concerns, including the severe agrarian crisis in the Cauvery delta, widespread power shortages, industrial retrenchments, steep price hikes in milk, and the deteriorating fiscal condition of the state. He urged the Speaker and the ruling leadership to uphold parliamentary conventions, respect opposition rights, and allow substantive debates without resorting to arbitrary evictions, ensuring that the legislative chamber functions as a true forum of popular democracy.
