Voicing deep concern and condemnation over the targeted harassment directed against acclaimed Tamil novelist Perumal Murugan, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin denounced reactionary fundamentalists for attempting to sow discord in Tamil Nadu. Murugan had faced severe intimidation, burning of his books, and coercive pressure from orthodox caste outfits over his celebrated novel Madhorubhagan, culminating in an orchestrated campaign that forced the author into declared literary exile. Stalin emphasized that Tamil society has an illustrious history of progressive literature, cultural debate, and intellectual tolerance that cannot be held hostage by fringe reactionary forces. He criticized the local administration and police for failing to provide adequate protection to the writer, instead forcing him into an humiliating compromise that silenced his literary voice. Stalin recalled that the Dravidian movement led by Thanthai Periyar and Perarignar Anna always stood as a fearless shield for progressive intellectuals fighting superstition and caste bigotry. He called upon civil society, writers, and political parties to stand united in defense of Perumal Murugan, affirming that the DMK will resist all fundamentalist attempts to curb creative expression across the state.
