Finance minister @arunjaitley meets a person convicted on corruption charges at her home. Can there be a bigger disgrace to his office?
Voicing strong outrage over Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley visiting convicted former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence in Chennai, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin questioned whether there could be a bigger disgrace to a high constitutional office. Stalin pointed out that Jaitley, holding the critical portfolio of the nation's finance and being an eminent legal professional, had severely diminished the moral standing of his office by calling upon an individual convicted in a multi-crore disproportionate assets case. He remarked that the private meeting, taking place while an appeal was pending before the High Court, sent an alarming and inappropriate message regarding executive interference in judicial processes. Stalin criticized the central leadership for trading away anti-corruption principles simply to secure AIADMK votes for contentious economic bills in Parliament. He emphasized that the spectacle of a senior union cabinet minister courting a convicted politician in her private residence made a mockery of institutional ethics and public integrity. Stalin demanded that the central government explain the purpose of this clandestine visit, asserting that such unprincipled political opportunism subverts constitutional propriety and insults the judiciary.
