Chennai corporations pathetic attempt at presenting a budget lacks vision and fails to understand the basic civic needs of a city
Critiquing the annual budget presented by the Greater Chennai Corporation, former Chennai Mayor and DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin characterized the financial blueprint as a pathetic, visionless exercise that completely misunderstood the essential civic needs of the metropolis. Stalin pointed out that while the city was rapidly expanding and confronting unprecedented urban challenges, the corporation administration had failed to allocate necessary budgetary resources for vital civic infrastructure. Key priorities such as completing comprehensive storm water drainage networks, modernizing decentralized solid waste management, desilting major waterways, and rehabilitating congested slum tenements were glaringly omitted. Stalin recalled that during his tenure as Mayor of Chennai, landmark infrastructure projects including the Singara Chennai initiative, modern flyovers, pedestrian pathways, and decentralized civic delivery systems transformed the capital into a vibrant global city. In contrast, under AIADMK municipal leadership, the civic body had degenerated into financial insolvency and contractual corruption, leaving roads potholed, streetlights dysfunctional, and neighborhoods chronically flooded. Stalin demanded that the civic administration revise its budgetary priorities, prioritize basic amenities for ordinary citizens, and implement visionary master plans to rescue Chennai from escalating civic degradation.
