Expressing serious concern over the ongoing indefinite strike by more than one lakh nutritious meal workers across Tamil Nadu, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin appealed to the state government to initiate immediate bilateral negotiations. The strike, which entered its fourth day in April 2015, involved mostly women workers, cooks, and kitchen organizers demanding regular time scales of pay, comprehensive pension benefits, gratuity, and fair promotion avenues. Stalin pointed out that noon meal staff form the backbone of the state's school nutrition system, preparing daily meals for millions of underprivileged children in government schools. He condemned the AIADMK administration for adopting an indifferent and hostile attitude toward the striking workers, threatening disciplinary action instead of addressing their legitimate livelihood demands. Stalin reminded the ruling regime that previous DMK administrations consistently enhanced allowances, created welfare boards, and recognized the dignity of grassroots welfare personnel. He stressed that prolonged administrative obstinacy not only inflicted economic hardship on impoverished women employees but also severely disrupted mid-day meals for vulnerable school students across the state. Stalin urged the government to hold constructive discussions without delay to resolve their grievances justly and compassionately.
