On this World Press Freedom Day, I’d like to take the opportunity to thank the media for the constructive role they play in our democracy.

Editorial context

Commemorating World Press Freedom Day on May 3, 2015, DMK Treasurer M. K. Stalin extended heartfelt appreciation to journalists, photojournalists, and media organizations for their indispensable contributions to democratic governance. Stalin emphasized that an independent, vigilant, and courageous press serves as the fourth pillar of democracy, holding powerful establishments accountable and amplifying the voices of marginalized sections. He noted that democracy cannot thrive in an atmosphere where reporters face intimidation, censorship, or legal harassment for exposing administrative malfeasance. The DMK, with its deep roots in rationalist journalism through iconic publications founded by Thanthai Periyar and Perarignar Anna, has always championed uninhibited freedom of speech and expression. Stalin voiced serious concern over the increasing use of criminal defamation suits by the ruling AIADMK government to muzzle critical investigative reporting across Tamil Nadu. He called upon all democratic forces to defend journalistic freedom against executive overreach and political intolerance. Concluding his message, Stalin urged media professionals to remain steadfast in their commitment to objective truth, ethical inquiry, and constitutional values, ensuring that democratic institutions remain transparent, vibrant, and resilient against executive coercion.

This is an initiative of unofficial DMK and Dravidian Ideology supporter, a fan of Thanthai Periyar, Perarignar Anna and Kalaignar — not affiliated with any official DMK party or persons.
